Content of Letter
Your letter should be personal, and should state that you are a registered voter in the district of your representative or senator. State your opinion in one or two sentences. There is no need to give long explanations for your opinion. Ask your legislator to vote on any legislation that might be on the subject of your letter in accordance with your opinion.
Do not threaten to withhold your vote if he or she does not vote your way. On another subject you may find that you agree. We can't all agree on everything. The person you disagree with today may be the person you will agree with tomorrow.
Assume your legislator wants the best for his or her district and for the state. If you can, find something nice to say. Being a legislator is hard work and requires personal sacrifice to serve as an elected official.
Offer to talk by phone or in person with your legislator on the matter about which you have written.
The letter should be clear, brief, and only on one issue. Write separate letters for other issues.
